The Department of Chemistry
With the foundation of the institution in 1930, Chemistry courses were taught at the Faculty specialties. The Department of Chemistry was founded in August 1937. Its first leader was professor V. Bogatschi. In July 1949, the professor Alexandru Camenev was elected head of the department through a competition. After the departure of professor Alexandru Camenev in Kiev in 1952, the Head of the department was appointed Eugen Nirca.
Later, Tudor Rusu, Moise Faerştein, Tudor Carabadjac held the position of Head of the department. Due to the increase of the students’ number in the three departments of the Faculty of Biology and Chemistry, Chemistry being introduced as a study discipline at the Faculty of Geography, Physics and Mathematics, there substantially increased the number of hours and the teaching staff. At that moment within the deparment there worked 15 specialists, having as guests: academicians Antonie Ablov, Iurie Lealicov, Gheorghe Lazurievski, prof. Mihail Cherdivarenco etc.
At the Chemistry department there was a seminar of Chemistry teachers from the city and districts, where there were solved stringent problems in order to deepen the theoretical didactic knowledge and practical skills. In the given field there were made efforts to organize the republican and district olympiads.
Beginning with 1992, after the evacuation of the university in Chisinau, because all the material base remained in Tiraspol during the Transnistrian conflict, the members of the department took measures to create the conditions of activity and training of future specialists, to equip the laboratories with the necessary equipment, to buy computers and educational software specific to Chemistry etc. Historically, the department of Chemistry had a specific and unique mission compared to the departments in the field from other universities – the training of Chemistry teachers, thus, the Didactics of Chemistry with all its implications is an area of strategic interest. Having its headquarters in Chisinau, the department was led by Tudor Para, Tidel Şanţovoi, Eduard Coropceanu, Grigore Filip, Alexandru Ciocârlan, Ion Arsene. New specialties were opened: Chemistry, Chemistry and Physics, Chemistry and Biology, Chemistry and Informatics, Ecological Security.
At present, the department of Chemistry offers educational services for all three university cycles: bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate. The members of the department participate in the teachers’ continuous professional training, as well as in the retraining of specialists from other fields. The scientific-methodological seminar “Didactics of Chemistry” has the mission of a discussion platform, where there addressed the most current issues in the field of Chemistry training.
In order to increase the professional competencies, the members of the Chemistry department carry out continuous training stages in various institutions in the country, as well as academic mobility in prestigious institutions abroad (Pedagogical University of Krakow, University of Craiova, “AI Cuza” University of Iasi, University of Chernivtsi, University of Turin, University of Palermo, the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry “P. Poni”from Iași, Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj Napoca, Polytechnic University of Bucharest, Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry in Moscow, etc.). Personalities in the field from the country and abroad are invited to the department with public lessons: Popescu R., Geană I., Moldoveanu C., Zbanciog Gh., Pui A., Cozma D., Lazzara G., Rotaru A., Rotaru P., Sandu M. etc.

IV. List of disciplines
The Chemistry Department offers educational services for the specialties: Chemistry, Chemistry and Physics, Chemistry and Biology, Chemistry and Informatics, Ecological Security, Biology and Chemistry, Geography and Biology (cycle I).
Form of studying | Speciality | Duration, year |
Full-time | Chemistry | 3 |
Ecological Security | 3 | |
Chemistry and Biology | 4
Chemistry and Informatics | 4
Chemistry and Physics | 4
Part-time | Chemistry | 4 |
At cycle II (Master’s degree) there are trained specialists in tree specialties:
- Contemporary Chemistry and Educational Technologies;
- Ecological Chemistry;
- Product Expertise and criminal investigation.
At cycle III (Doctorate) there are trained specialists in the specialty of Didactics of Chemistry. Within the specialties of the department, various inter- and transdisciplinary studies are carried out, which allows the training of specialists able to fully analyze problems and natural phenomena and to correspond to the current situation in the educational sphere.
V. Laboratories
The department has specialized educational and research laboratories:
- Inorganic Chemistry;
- Organic Chemistry;
- Physical Chemistry;
- Analytical Chemistry;
- Information Technologies Applied in Chemistry;
- Didactics of Chemistry;
- Experimental Chemistry (research laboratory).
The members of the department take part in a series of research projects in the field of Chemistry (fundamental and applied), as well as in the field of Pedagogy, the results being reflected in scientific papers published in prestigious journals, patents and mentions at various exhibitions, national and international competitions.The achievements of research in scientific projects are reflected in the profile disciplines. The results obtained within the European ERASMUS + projects are implemented within the study programs coordinated by the department.
The students of the department’s programs are involved in the realization of some institutional research projects (Rotaru Mihaela, Stati Dumitru, Gorobeț Anastasia, Cociu Vera, Budei Olga, etc.). The university carries out research projects for internally funded students.
VI. Didactic activity
Within the department there is the “Young Chemist” circle, in where the students have the opportunity to make different fun-demonstrative experiences, present reports on chemical phenomena, recent achievements in Chemistry, personal results in scientific researches, meet with prominent personalities in the field, etc. At the students’ initiative, on a voluntary basis, there are meetings with high school students, orphanages, institutions with special status, in which students present a series of experiences that captivate students, generate a series of questions on enigmatic phenomena, motivate for a study deeper of the discipline. For the children from institutions with social protection objectives, the students organize charity activities.
Students’ Involvement in Scientific Research
Students of cycle I and II are involved in research in various fields: synthesis of organic compounds, assembly of coordination polymers, study of chemical, physical and biological properties of synthesized compounds, quantum studies on different energy systems, analysis of quality of aquatic sources, soil and food products, elaboration of mechanisms for streamlining the Chemistry training process.
The students of the department’s programs are involved in carrying out institutional research projects (Rotaru Mihaela, Stati Dumitru, Gorobeț Anastasia, Cociu Vera, Budei Olga, etc.). The university carries out research projects for internally funded students:
1. Synthesis and study of the properties of new coordination compounds with polymeric molecular design based on ligands with various functional groups, coordinator Chișca D. (Cociu V., Pliusnina M., Benea E., Rotaru M., Cernei G.);
2. Quantum-chemical study of the energy stability of some molecules and of the energy profile of the mechanisms of some chemical reactions, coordinator Arsene Ion ( Purcel Z., Dabija D., Barbaroș E., Gorobeț A., Morari V.).
Students’ Academic Mobility
In order to familiarize students with the experience of other institutions in the country and abroad, there is organized the academic mobility in universities with specialties. The students with the highest performances, on the basis of competition, are selected for internships at the University of Krakow, the University of Craiova and others (Nemciuc Gheorghe, Rotaru Mihaela, Munteanu Mihaela, Stati Dumitru, etc.).
