THE DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES

I. GENERAL INFORMATION

The Department of Foreign Languages ​​and Literatures was reorganized based on the Departments of Foreign Languages, Modern Languages ​​and Russian Language and Literature in 2012 and brings together highly qualified professionals, dedicated to their work and vocation, known in the educational environment of the Republic of Moldova, including doctors in Philology and Pedagogy, university lecturers and PhD candidates. The members of the department ensure the efficient conduct of the didactic, methodical and research activities in both the humanities and the exact sciences.

 The obligations and the principles of the teaching staff activity are:

  • To carry out lectures, seminars  provided by the curricula
  • to ensure the management of the pedagogical practice
  • to offer aid and support for the students in their individual work
  • to contribute to the students’ integration in the programs of study with international cooperation
  •  to participate in the realization of the modules of didactic-methodical and research activity.
  • to ensure the perpetuity of language knowledge, acquired in high school

The major goal in teaching and studying foreign languages is to develop students’ communicative skills.

The Department provides language services to all the faculties of the university.

II. SCIENTIFIC AND DIDACTIC ACTIVITIES

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures conducts a scientific-methodological seminar in the area: “The text – philological and methodological problems”, which brings together linguists and teachers in discussing the topics centered, oriented towards self-improvement, continuity of scientific interests and individual process; formation of students’  philological analysis skills.

In order to achieve the objectives outlined above, the members of the department are actively working in the direction of scientific research, such as the optimization of the process of studying the foreign language in higher education:

  • study of the foreign language from a linguistic, literary and didactic perspective
  • text and context – linguistic, discursive and didactic valences
  • development of future teachers’  linguistic and intercultural competences
  • metalinguistic reflection on the development of the students’ linguistic and pragmatic skills.

The results are valorized through the organization/participation in national and international scientific conferences, round tables with the invitation of foreign specialists, manifestations of intra/interuniversity scientific conferences, presentation of didactic communications.

Another activity of the Department which is not less important is the organization of the student scientific conference organized in April of each year. Its objectives lie in training students in scientific research in their field of specialty and the professional development of their speech.

As a consequence of the students’ participation in the conference, under the guidance of the members of the department, annually, scientific papers are presented and published by the students presenting the results of their work.

IV. TECHNICAL AND MATERIAL BASE

The department has three profile classrooms with computers and projectors, a scanner, tape recorders, video and audio cassettes. Monthly, in these classrooms there are organized students’ societies:
a) English students’ society «Page Turners»
b) French students’ society «Les Francophiles»

V. COLLABORATION

The Department of Foreign Languages ​​and Literatures carries out an important activity of international collaboration with the Francophone University Agency and the French Alliance, a fact which offers multiple possibilities for teachers and students from the specialties with French language: academic mobility scholarships, vocational training, methodological seminars, film watching, exhibitions , scientific conferences, thematic contests, fruitful collaboration with the Moscow State University of Linguistics, Russian Literature Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia, Moscow State Pedagogical University, Institute of Universal Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The teachers of the department are members of Russian and French Teachers Associations and of the English Teachers Resource Center (ETRC), which is a multimedia center created for English teachers in order to promote collaboration and improvement. skills for teaching English in the Republic of Moldova

The participation in various trainings, scientific conferences and national and international internships, work love and creative attitude in teaching foreign languages ​​have substantially contributed to the education of a whole bunch of English, French and Russian teachers.

Currently the teaching staff of the Department ensures the acquisition of the disciplines of study at the specializations:

  • Russian Language and Literature and English Language
  • Romanian Language and Literature and English Language
  • Romanian Language and Literature and French Language
  • Pedagogy of Primary Education and English
  • Geography and English

In a globalized and multicultural world, these specialties require the development of specific common skills: the ability to use correctly the studied foreign languages, the ability to orientate in the foreign and Romanian cultural space, the ability to produce and interpret the text, the capacity for intercultural communication. These are the main competences developed by the fundamental disciplines in the study programs within the Department of Foreign Languages ​​and Literatures.
